HISTORY
OF HEWITT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
HEWITT,
TEXAS
1894
On
the 20th day of October, 1894, in a conference meeting of the
Baptist Church of White Hall, the subject was brought up as to
the advisability of organizing a church at Hewitt. After a lengthy
discussion, a unanimous vote was given to the effect that it was
the duty of the Baptists to organize a church at that place. "On
Sunday Nov 4th 1894 a number of Brethren and Sisters met at Hewitt,
Texas to consider the propriety of organizing a Baptist Church.
J. B. Reaves, J. W. Thomas and J. L. Ward were invited to participate
as a Presbytery or Council of Ministers to assist in the organizing
of a Church. The membership of the White Hall Baptist Church who
were present were also invited to assist in the organization."
Bro. Thomas
was chosen Moderator and Bro. Ward, Clerk. The White Hall Church
voted to dismiss by a joint letter all of its members who wished
to join the new congregation.
The twenty
organizing members of the Hewitt Church were Elenor Barnes (later
Mrs. Cooksey), A.B.R. and Martha A. Bell, Robert Bell, John Perry
and Sarah (Sallie) J. Blanton, H.B. and M.E. Driskol, Ellis C.
and Sarah E. Kellogg, Bertha C. Page, Warren W. and Susan C. Smith,
P.W. and Rebecca Sterling, George R. and Nekaya L. Trice, William
Ligon Trice, Lula Trice and Minnie Warren.
The Articles
of Faith, as recorded in Pendleton's Church Manual, were read
and adopted, as was the Church Covenant found in the same. The
Charge was then delivered to the infant Church by Rev. J.B. Reaves.
It was short, but earnest and impressive. The name, Hewitt Baptist
Church, was assumed by the new congregation. Bro. Reaves was chosen
Pastor and W.W. Smith was elected Clerk. The Church voted to conduct
regular conference meetings on the Saturday preceding the first
Sunday of each month. A committee was appointed to solicit contributions
to build a house of worship.
